"Late Afternoon, Mitchell"
Mitchell is nearly 600km from Brisbane, and the nearest large town to it is Charleville, 181km to the west. It was named after Sir Thomas Mitchell, and is in an area where grain and grazing are both practised. Many large bottle trees grow in the streets. In this painting, Ludij has put in a small one, but they grow until the trunk has swollen to a shape that is more like an egg than a bottle. A couple of old split bamboo blinds have been fixed to the verandah posts to protect the windows from the late afternoon sun.
